D’Oyly Carte Island is a historic gem nestled on the River Thames at Weybridge. For several years, The Structure Studio has been a key partner in preserving and enhancing this unique private island. Our involvement spans from modern leisure additions to the meticulous restoration of the island’s architectural centerpiece: Eyot House.

Engineering for Culture & Community

Our work on the island began with a focus on public engagement and modern utility:

  • The ‘D’Oylys’ Café: We assisted in the design of a new, bespoke open-air café, creating a contemporary space that respects its riverside setting.
  • Footbridge Appraisal: To support the island’s vibrant event schedule, we conducted a comprehensive engineering appraisal of the existing footbridge, ensuring its structural integrity for high-capacity public use.

The Restoration of Eyot House

Dominating the island is the Grade II listed Eyot House, a historic timber-framed residence built by Richard D’Oyly Carte—the legendary manager of the Savoy Opera Company. Originally intended as a hotel and later used as a rehearsal retreat for opera stars, the property is now undergoing a transformative refurbishment.

The Structure Studio’s role includes:

  • Contemporary Extension: Engineering a large-scale modern addition featuring a striking dome-roofed atrium and an expansive external roof terrace.
  • Maximising Buildability: Collaborating closely with the Architects to refine complex geometries and ensure the new structures are both stunning and constructible within the constraints of an island site.
  • Sensitive Heritage Repairs: Providing bespoke structural repair details for the original historic timber frame, ensuring the home’s 19th-century character is preserved for the next century.
