This project comprised the conversion of two derelict stone barns into a contemporary home on the outskirts of Bristol. The project required the specification of repairs to the existing stonework and lintels, and the design of new mezzanine and roof structures. The height of the barn also had to be raised to accommodate the first floor, so a steel and timber frame was designed to sit atop the existing structure.

After reviewing several options with the client they selected an exposed flitch beam for the roof structure, which is a modern take on the traditional trussed barn roof, which gave better visibility between the open plan ground floor living area and mezzanine as well as providing a material and cost saving.

In addition to this, we provided the design of the new below ground drainage system. As the property is isolated from the mains sewer network, the project required the surface water to be discharged to a local watercourse and the foul drainage to discharge to a package treatment plant.
