Putney Town Rowing Club – Cantilever Wraparound Balcony

Location

St Albans

Sector

Private Residential

The recent enhancement to Putney Town Rowing Club showcases a sophisticated balance between modern structural engineering, architecture and the preservation of historic athletic character. The project focused on the installation of a high-performance steel-framed balcony to create a multi-use space for the club and its members. The balcony can be used as an outdoor training space as well as social space as well as doubling as a canopy to over the boat bays below.

Project Highlights

  • Ambitious Cantilever Design: To provide unobstructed views of the Thames, the balcony features a significant cantilever. This was achieved through inteligent design of a new steel frame that, when integrated within the existing steel frame, provides sufficient stiffness and vibration control without the need for intrusive external columns.
  • Sympathetic Engineering: The new steel frame was engineered to echo the industrial and nautical aesthetic of the original clubhouse. The connection details and member profiles were selected to feel like a natural extension of the existing fabric rather than a modern imposition.
  • Non-Invasive Installation: A primary technical constraint was the requirement for minimal internal works so as to avoid imposing limitations on the ongoing use of the boathouse. Our team developed a bespoke strategy that utilised existing load-bearing points, allowing the club to remain operational throughout.

“The challenge was to deliver a bold, floating vantage point that felt as though it had always been part of the club’s silhouette. By utilising a cantilevered steel frame, we bypassed the need for ground-level supports, maintaining the clean lines of the rowing bays below.
